Wigle Monongahela Rye Whiskey Overview
The local Wine and Spirits has a selection of “local products” and this shelf contains typically 1-3 types of whiskey. Last month I picked up a bottle of Wigle Small Cask Organic Monongahela Rye Whiskey. Having seen a review on their straight rye whiskey product, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try this series. Seems like I have enjoyed this series almost too much. Having purchased a bottle of my go to rye whiskey, Bulleit Rye, and a bottle of Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition style rye whiskey to prevent myself from drinking all of my Wigle. Unfortunately I am still down to my final shot of Wigle. As a result my other bottles are nearly full. I am currently using Fee Brothers bitters and a big box store simple syrup for this product.
The nose starts oaky but as the initial oak fades there are citrus notes on raw leather and hints of mild tobacco.
Palate is bold with honey comb, white pepper, 12 grain wheat toast, and chewed on number 2 pencil.
Finish is white pepper, fresh eucalypti, latex paint, and stale graham cracker.
The accents meld wonderfully with an Ole Fashioned I would suggest less aromatic and more orange with this mix as the spicy notes of this whiskey really come to life with the added citrus.
In conclusion, this is no Whistle Pig or Alberta Spring Rye Whiskey, but it is however a good choice for a mid range price point. Hence why I am eager to try more Wigle Rye Whiskey series. Since I live a few hours away I am going to take a voyage to their tasting room. I may even schedule a tour of their distillery. I will make a follow up of my experiences.
I pair this rye whiskey with Cucumber Cantaloupe Gelato Vape Juice. VapEnvy – Paso Robles private label.
